The West AHEC offers many health careers recruitment activities designed to spark an interest in pursuing a career in health care. Our programs vary, targeting different age groups from elementary school children to adults. The following is a list of the programs/activities we offer:

College Library Catalogs – A current library with catalogs from Colleges/Universities in Kentucky is kept in the West AHEC office for those interested in looking at various school/program requirements. In addition, information is mailed to those requesting specific information on colleges, programs and/or health careers.

College/Career Days – AHEC Staff travel to schools within our AHEC region to promote health careers. An exhibit table with career information and resources can be set up.

Tours – Assistance is available in arranging for student groups to take field trips to the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center or tour local hospitals and colleges.

Ground Hog Shadow Day - This program is coordinated annually by the AHEC office for elementary and middle school students in Hopkins County whose parents are employees of Regional Medical Center. The students spend time with mom or dad seeing where they work and what they do and then gather as a group to participate in hands on learning modules and learn from health care professionals about their careers.

Bulletin Board –A bulletin board at Madisonville North Hopkins High School is designed and the theme changed periodically throughout the school year to feature different careers in health career.

LIFE Project – This project is sponsored by the Hopkins County School-to-Work Program and is for all Hopkins County 8th graders. The program is designed to introduce students to real life situations and issues related to the cost of living. West AHEC coordinates workers for the health care insurance booth.

9th Grade Health Career Fair – Coordinated annually by the AHEC office for all 9th graders in Hopkins County. Health career programs from the KCTCS Madisonville Health Technology Campus, Madisonville Community College, Henderson Community College and other institutions are represented at the fair. All booths represent careers in health care and have hands on activities for the students.

First Step Nursing Program – This program is for senior high school students enrolled in the Hopkins County School System, interested in a career in nursing and enrolled in the health sciences classes. Students interview for a limited number of slots for the opportunity to work at Regional Medical Center, which serves as their work-based learning site. They are paired with nursing preceptors/mentors and learn the basics of nursing. Following the program, students are eligible to sit for the Certified Nurses Aide exam.

Shadowing Experiences – Shadowing experiences can be arranged for students interested in a future career in health care. Often, these shadowing experiences are requirements to fulfill the application process for many health career programs.

Health Career Presentations/Guest speakers – Staff will travel to schools and make presentations on careers in health care. In addition, arrangements can be made for a health care professional to speak to students and other organizations, e.g., PTA meetings, Farm Safety Days, classrooms, etc.

High School Rural Scholar Program – This summer program is for rising high school seniors. Each participating county has Health Career Advisory Council made up of community leaders who review the applications and select the students for the program. Selection is based on a written statement, interest in a health career, interest in returning to a rural community as a health care provider and through an interview process. During the program, students are based in their home county and shadow health professionals, work at a host site, such as a local Health Department, and complete ACT preparation work via the Internet and CD ROM. This program is available to students in Webster, Hopkins, Caldwell, Muhlenberg and McLean counties.

Summer Employment Program – This program is for college age students who are enrolled in a pre-med program. These students work in either the Emergency Room and/or the Operating Room at a local hospital and help with AHEC summer programs. The number of available positions varies each year depending on funding and the application deadline is April 1.

Prematriculation Program - a 4-week summer program in Madisonville for rising 1st year medical students at UofL. During the month, students are paired with primary care physicians in and around Hopkins County, attend hands on learning modules and case discussions with local faculty and physicians and participate in community health care assessments, all helping to better prepare them for medical school.

Preclinical Program – a 4-week summer program in Madisonville for rising 2nd year medical students at UofL. During the month, students are paired with primary care physicians in and around Hopkins County, continue learning modules designed to improve their clinical skills as are offered in the Prematriculation Program, etc.
