The West AHEC sponsors community health education events designed to address specific health issues and to educate the public so they can become better informed about ways to improve their own health.
We have targeted women’s health issues over the years addressing many health topics through our Women’s Health Forums and addressing prenatal and newborn care with our World’s Greatest Baby Showers. More information on these programs follows:
WOMEN’S HEALTH FORUMS
Since 1998, the West AHEC has offered Women’s Health Forums on various health topics. Topics have included weight management, heart disease, menopause, dealing with hormones, migraines, osteoporosis, dermatology and skin health, cosmetic surgery, PMS, herbal medicine, etc. Some have been presented in a one-hour lunch format while others have been evening workshops. These programs take place in Madisonville and are marketed to counties within our region. A planning committee made up of several community partners meets regularly to review past evaluations and plan future forums.
The latest Women's Health Forum was on the topic of Breast Cancer. The luncheon program was held on April 5, 2007, at First United Methodist Church in Madisonville. Dr. Beth Snell, Department of Surgery, Trover Health System was the speaker. Our special guest was Mrs. Glenna Fletcher. WEST AHEC “WORLD’S GREATEST BABY SHOWERS”
Since 1993, the West AHEC has been sponsoring “World’s Greatest Baby Showers” in several counties within our region. We began with one shower and over the years have developed showers in nine of our fourteen counties. This event is designed to be an educational, informative and fun event for expectant parents.
The showers are divided into three sessions. The first session is a “Facts of Life” game with true and false questions regarding pregnancy, prenatal and newborn care. Volunteer participants from the audience compete against each other on teams to answer the questions. The second session is a series of presentations from local health care providers on topics such as car seat safety, breastfeeding, immunizations, obstructed airways, over the counter medications, etc. The committee develops the sessions to meet the needs of their communities. The final session is called “Ask A Doc”, and involves local OB/GYN, pediatric or family practice physicians, along with nurse midwifes, who answer questions from the audience.
The showers also include exhibits of local resources and door prizes donated by local organizations/merchants. Decorations and refreshments are done in a traditional baby shower theme. The evaluations from the showers are always very positive; with participants consistently responding they came away with much needed and appreciated information. Some showers have over 200 participants.
2008 Baby Shower dates and locations are TBA.
